Wood Preservation Methods
The study of wood as a renewable material and organic material is what is known as wood science. In other words, the term wood science can also be known as wood technology. Other products are put alongside wood for easy testing and study. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. The many Merits of timber and these technologies improve wood to be superior over other products. Wood can be applied in very many applications, and this gives it an upper hand over other materials. Once a tree has been cut down another can be planted in the same spot. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.
The good appearance of your timber made structure cannot be guaranteed if protection of the timber is not done. This protection is from moisture and insects which are the biggest threat to wood. The rotting and decay of the timber products are caused by the moisture and the insects. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. As the name implies the preservative is made of copper products. As effective as this preservative, it has some downside to its use. It is a highly corrosive chemical that affects most metals that are used together with the wooden products. The saturation level of any treatment will depend on where the wood is going to be used and the species of the wood. Timber being used around a water body will be dipped in a more saturated fluid than that being used above ground.
The use of copper metal is another method of wood treatment that is fast being accepted. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. This process is what in other words called the micronized copper wood preservative. In this process microscopic particles of solid copper metal are mixed in a liquid carrier and injected to the wood at high pressure. In other copper-based preservation methods copper is dissolved in chemicals while in this method copper is driven into the wood as a metal. The characteristics of the wood are highly improved and the when this process is used to treat wood. The wood products protected using this method last longer.
Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. Unlike other methods of treatment this method is not corrosive. When you use this method to treat wood, then you will not need to worry for at least ten years.
